Today I saw the sun rise and set.

Remember how yesterday I wrote about how I have “don’t-want-to-miss-a-thing” syndrome? Well, yesterday I woke up at 9 am and made breakfast for my roommates, wrote my Bible study entry, went to Pep Boys, went to Starbucks for a bit, came home and then went to McDonalds to get food for me and Rachel and then was up all night wikipediaing Lady GaGa, the Olsen Twins, Josh from Drake and Josh… then I took a shower, and suddenly it was 4 am.

Knowing that I’d have to be up soon to get Sarah from the airport, I made the decision to just push through. If you’ve ever done this, you know that it seems like a great idea until 40 minutes later when you’ve brewed a pot of coffee and REALLY want to sleep. Then Sarah’s flight was cancelled and my lunch plans got cancelled so I had the entire day ahead of me. I was planning on driving over to Temecula to see Erlinda or finding some random place to explore, but then one of the families I sit for regularly asked if I could sit for them. and so I did. It was great fun; we went to the park and did a lot of wrestling and playing.

Rewind a bit, though. On Friday my friend Gregory {the one I wish I talked to more, remember?} randomly sent me what I will call a picture message postcard with greetings. All day I was evaluating the various aspects of California and at the end of the day concluded that California was too ugly to picture message postcard back.

Which has got me feeling kind of bad, because California really isn’t that bad. So I decided two things I really like about where I live. First and foremost, I LOVE the sky. Mostly the sunsets. Gosh they just kill me! Second, I love whatever mountains I live near.
So today, as soon as I was done babysitting, I bought myself a Snapple, got some gas and zoomed towards the mountains, racing the sun. I didn’t know where I was going or if what I’d imagined even existed. Every time I came to a stop sign, I’d look to my right and see if the road #1. was a dead end, and then #2. went up. My adrenaline was going and it felt so urgent.
Then, I turned on a road and knew I had hit the jackpot when I saw..

This is the picture I stopped {where it said NO STOPPING, EVER} and took with my cell phone:

This CLEARLY does it no justice. But neither do the pictures I took with my camera, so just trust me on this one. It was phenomenal.

So that hit the spot, my little spontaneous adventure. I’m determined to find a better place to watch the sun set over everything because I have this feeling that it gets better.
As The BGP once sang in my favorite song…

When I stand on my hill at the top
..basically, I like the view.

EVEN if the view is of California. It will do for now.
Here’s to many more adventures, because if I get back in the adventure business then I will like California a lot more.

  1. I enjoy pictures of sunsets so much. Your friend Gregory will enjoy them too. You did a great job!

Our church sets up a little worship band on Saturday nights at the park on a river/ocean off Florida. We watch the sun go down and the manatees and dolphins play. It’s wonderful.

  2. I love the sky so much!! πŸ™‚ It’s a shame that I don’t have some fancy camera that catches the beauty of it {reminds me of the John Mayer song 3×5}

That worship time sounds really amazing and I wish I could go. you should take pictures sometime! I’d love to see. πŸ™‚

  3. Your post cracks me up for two reasons:

    1. I am from CA originally and I think the entire state is beautiful. Literally. haha

    2. I saw a gorgeous sunrise this morning in NV and took a few different pictures – not a single one did it justice.

  4. I live in Philadelphia, so there is no spectacular scenery or mountains or oceans here. But I do love our sky. I was so disappointed when we had to turn the clocks forward, because I hate leaving work when it’s dark out. But then I realized that I would get to see a spectacular sunset every single night, which I usually missed because I was home and inside already. But with the time change I see it every night, and every night it amazes me. I love your pictures, and I love that you captured the beauty! I’m going to have to bring my camera along with me sometime!

  5. Brittany – The ENTIRE state? Where in CA are you from? I was in northern California at the end of last week and was driving on the 1 between Pacifica and Santa Cruz and thought “yeah, this place is nice.” but I only feel like it is BEAUTIFUL {breath-taking, awe-inspiring beautiful} in northern California. Maybe I am just missing places. Where should I go?? AND. Holy John Mayer Song, because whenever I try to capture pictures of what I’m experiencing I just sing “3×5” to myself.

Laura – take your camera and document it and share it. I want to see. and. I love that there are little blessings in everything, even in having to leave in the dark {I HATE THAT TOO}. Sunsets, I believe, are just God’s way of showing off to those of us who are paying attention πŸ˜‰

  6. I grew up in LA County, outside of LA. I love the beaches and the desert. The only places in CA I haven’t found wonderful are the places where the gangs have destroyed neighborhoods. I could be biased since I was born there, but who knows haha.
